  'Digital Dailies'

Traditionally, the concept of 'dailies' or 'rushes' is a time-intensive, costly process, whereby film material is transported from the set (or location) to a film laboratory, processed and these rough prints are then delivered back to the shooting location for review by the production staff.

More recently, rather than deliver film prints back to the set, the concept of 'digital dailies' has been introduced, whereby the prints from the day's shooting are scanned and these digital copies then delivered electronically back to the set, often using secure, high-speed media networks such as Sohonet.

Codex can improve production workflow by making high-quality pictures available on-set immediately after shooting. By using a high-resolution monitoring system, HD or 4K pictures can be viewed, and Codex's comprehensive iLUT facility allows the 'digital negative' to be examined closely for potential exposure, lighting or colour problems.

By having Codex provide high-quality playback immediately after shooting, decisions can be made concerning shot-coverage and retakes, which can save literally days of valuable production schedule time.

As the diagrams below show, using Codex also provides a much more secure workflow, by eliminating possible areas where the unique film negative could potentially be lost in transit or damaged:

With Codex, several of the stages above can be simplified or removed completely. As shots are immediately available for replay straight after shooting, instant decisions can be made regarding retakes and, by using a second Codex system, not only can this serve as a dedicated 'review station' for close inspection of recorded material without holding up shooting, but this second system can act as a safety backup for the primary system, minimising any chances of data-loss on-set.

Sohonet

By utilising a 3rd party media network provider such as Codex Digital's partner, Sohonet, recorded material can be securely viewed anywhere in the world, and - depending on the exact configuration and location of the system - even in real-time. This provides a far more efficient workflow than when working with 'digital dailies' - shot material can be shipped 'back to base' rapidly, with 100% security and in a fraction of the time (and often at a fraction of the cost) of using conventional courier services.

Based in London, Los Angeles and Sydney, Sohonet's fast and advanced digital media network links a range of companies within the film, broadcast, advertising and multimedia industries, enabling them to share a broad array of media assets and to collaborate on projects.

Many of the world's leading production studios, post-production houses and advertising agencies rely on Sohonet's services, including Warner Bros, Pinewood and Shepperton Studios. With its connections to all the major production cities in the world, including New York and Rome, Sohonet is the longest-running and only independently profitable company providing these services to the media industry, and is closely involved in the design and development of all Codex Digital products.
